Is private tutoring only for the wealthy?

By Ruben Abarca

I grew up on the south side of Chicago and growing up I didn’t know anyone that had private tutors. We had our parents and older siblings, perhaps a group of friends that helped each other with homework or test preparation. However, living in the suburbs of Chicago I soon realized that many parents today hire private tutors for their children. Oftentimes these kids get tutored or coached in many subjects and in extracurricular activities.

The tutoring or lack thereof is making the education gap larger in this nation. In 2020 during the early part of the pandemic, only a small portion of middle- or low-income students had access to tutoring. As a result, a Pew Research Center article found that “lower-income families are most concerned (72 percent) about their children falling behind in school.” https://lnkd.in/gJuZAK-Q

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, learning loss was much more prevalent in schools that were near or below the poverty line. The report mentions “If the achievement losses become permanent, there will be major implications for future earnings, racial equity and income inequality, especially in states where remote instruction was common.”

The Washington Post also noted the disparity in learning loss between wealthy and lower income students. There are various factors for this gap such as lack of devices for remote learning, adequate space dedicated for studying or parental supervision. The article states that even prior to the pandemic “Black, Latino and Native American students receive 13 percent less funding than White students.” The gap grew as wealthier families hired private tutors to minimize learning loss, while low-income families did not have the luxury. https://lnkd.in/gKqyBzMh
