U.S. Students Lag Behind In Science, But There Is a Solution

At the beginning of the Pandemic, the Washington Post determined the following: “Teenagers in the United States continue to lag behind their peers in East Asia and Europe in math and science, according to results of an international exam that suggest U.S. schools are not doing enough to prepare young people for the competitive global economy.”

Peggy G. Carr, associate commissioner of the assessment division at the National Center for Education Statistics, said “the results sent an unmistakable message that U.S. students are in trouble when it comes to how they perform relative to their international peers.”
In states like California, science was the subject most affected by Covid-19. According to the Public Policy Institute and the NSA, “Science became a lower priority during the 2020–21 school year.”

What can be done to close the gap? What is the best strategy for helping our children improve in science and overall, in STEM?

According to the Hechinger report, the most effective way to significantly improve outcomes is through tutoring. Not just any tutoring, but “frequent one-to-one tutoring was especially effective in increasing learning rates for low-performing students”. https://lnkd.in/gqCuhjpv

The article goes on to state that this is not once a week homework help. That will not produce the best results. Instead, education researchers have a particular tutoring strategy in mind; “high-dosage” tutoring. The Hechinger report went on to report that high-dosage tutoring “produced big achievement gains for students when the tutoring occurs every day or almost every day”.

Parents often say they want the best for their kids, but we often will pay more for cable, cell phones, or stream service than what they invest in their child’s education. For less than the cost of a monthly cable bill, a child can benefit from high dosage tutoring.
