Why Your Child Should Learn to Code

by Ruben Abarca

There are many reasons why children should learn programming at an early age. Let’s look at a few of them.

Activates brain’s learning centers
According to a Carnegie Mellon study, coding activates five obvious mind regions which are related to “language processing, working memory, and problem-solving”. The study found that coding initiates different regions within the brain. “It builds up muscle memory and makes the brain’s ability to become more proficient within the process of learning.” https://lnkd.in/g_CxX8PY

Coding improves children’s grades in school
There are direct correlations with young children that learn to code and their academic performance in school. “Regardless of the subject or discipline, academic methods lie as the foundation of most modern career paths. Learning to code improves analytical, systematic, and organizational abilities.” https://lnkd.in/g8QuNH2G

Coding helps with problem solving skills
There have been many studies that prove this fact, one study in particular with children as young as 5 and 6 years old found that learning to code had a significant impact in “developing mathematical concepts, problem-solving and social skills.”  https://lnkd.in/gNUF3sJs

Learning to code helps with persistence and resilience
Programming is one of the few disciplines where it’s acceptable to be constantly failing. They spend hours trying to “track down an elusive bug”. In coding “success literally cannot be achieved until all errors are handled”.

Coding boosts memory and cognitive skills
Our memory’s decline with age. However, several studies have shown that “intellectually engaging activities serve to buffer individuals against [cognitive] decline”. https://lnkd.in/gq7ccast The human brain has a right and left hemisphere.  The right side is responsible for intuitive thinking and imagination, whereas the left is responsible for all analytical and logical thinking. “Engaging in programming improves the functions of both hemispheres which in turn, develops the brain as a whole.”

Programming also helps develop creativity, digital literacy, computational thinking as well as overall confidence and improved communication skills.
